John Hearder (1913–2000) was a distinguished war photographer and portrait artist whose work has left a lasting imprint on Australian photography. After serving in the Royal Navy during World War II—where he was appointed to lead the British Fleet’s photographic unit based in Sydney—Hearder settled in Australia and founded a photography studio that would go on to serve thousands of families, graduates, and institutions for generations.
Hearder’s wartime photographs, including images taken at Changi Prison Camp and aboard the USS Missouri during Japan’s surrender, are powerful historical records. Post-war, his studio on Castlereagh Street became renowned for its black-and-white glamour portraits and impeccable photographic standards.
What began as a personal passion for visual storytelling grew into a professional legacy—one that continues today through Graduation Photography, now proudly operated under Maskluck Pty Ltd. We honour John Hearder’s vision by upholding the same principles of integrity, quality, and timeless presentation in everything we do—from graduation portraits and ceremony coverage to modern student registration systems.
